Another important tip is to know where you're going to place all your stuff. Perhaps your truck is not able to carry all your furniture, or your new home is unable to smaller than you previously thought. When time is tight, you need a place to store all your items or it will end up on the street. Self storage units are a great option, there are a fair amount of sites that provide a list of facilities in your area. In addition, they can store a variety of miscellaneous items, ranging from cars and boats. arrowhead33 brings up a great point, make sure you organize as much as possible, to make your transition that much smoother.

When moving away cross-country, it's important to analyze your moving costs, how many days it will take, how you plan on moving everything, regardless of whether it's from a Kansas City moving company to a new home in Los Angeles.  Make sure you're budgets in order, whether it's residential moving or commercial movers, because the last thing you want is to overshoot your budget and find out the truck or van you hired wasn't able to fit every single possession of yours on one trip.

Basically, you want to make sure your ducks are in order, so much so that once you make the move, your only worry should be where you're going to organize everything.
