Yeah, it's mostly about the duplicate content issue.

But as I link extensively within my blog and never publish pages completely in tag or categories pages, I don't think I should worry too much about duplicate content (I'm never sure though).

On the other hand, my categories and tags tend to be somewhat redondant as I tend to use the same terms for both.

Hi David,

To be honest I don't think about them too much! I use them to add more narrow focus to post than an category does (I try to keep my categories limited in number).

What is the reasoning behind getting rid or hiding tags? Is it to improve the SEO of sites by not creating duplicate content?

Todd

A few days ago, talking with Mike, he suggested that I put my tag pages as unfindable by google. Then, the same week (that's last week not that it matters) on tentblogger.com John (the guys who writes the blog) suggested to simply get rid of Tags in blogs and only use Categories.

I've been thinking of it, and as it's true that I'm using Categories more and more, I started considering dropping tags and deleting all of them in favor of Categories.

Except that a few days ago, I noticed something, a bunch of my tags (the most niche ones, like the name of the islands I often talk about) are ranked on page 1 in Google!!! For example the page http://ogijima.com/tag/teshima currently ranks number 7.

So you can imagine that this seriously makes me reconsider the idea of deleting these pages.

Thing is, I've been heavily linking to them ever since I started my blog… For example, almost every time I mention "Teshima" I'll link the tag page.

What do you think?

How do you deal with tags in your blogs?
