it seems we have the same advertiser as I got the same message :) I don't think they are jerking us around. In stead I think they decided to change their permalink format to make the site more organized. in this case they need us to change the links to fit. i checked then they are still going to the same articles.

On the topic of changing links…

I received this from an advertiser…

"Hope you are well. I am wondering if you wouldn’t mind changing
some of the links in previous blog post we have written for your site, since my
client’s website has changed their URLl. I’ve attached a spread sheet which
shows the destination the blog is about, the anchor text, the new URL and the
link to the blog post. This would me greatly appreciated if you could do this
for me."

It seems the links are going to the same page, but it just seems a bit uncommon and I want to make sure I'm not getting dicked around. Any thoughts?

yes and no

If all you are doing is changing your domain name but keeping all of the same content, you will lose pagerank on the old domain but not until the new domain gets new pagerank. There is no guarantee of course, but it is almost always the case that the new domain will have the same pagerank as the old long before you lose pagerank from the old.

Like everything there is an exception to the rule. If you keep the same TLD such as .com, .net or .org then there should be no issues. But if you change from a .com to something like .info, .biz etc… then you may suffer. Your best bet is to go with the same TLD as you had.

Fair question.

When you move things around from website to website you are in danger of losing traffic from pages that have rank built up within them. Redirects can often cause you to lose all of the work done on the site.

A 301 redirect is a safe way to tell search engines. "Hey I am still here, I just moved to a fancier neighborhood." By using a 301 you are able to keep the power of the old site by telling search engines that the content has been permanently moved. The key there is that it is "permanent". Of course it does not have to be, you just need to let the search engines know to stop looking for you someplace else and to look for you at your forwarding address.

Most hosting services make it easy to just click a box to redirect. But in some cases they don't so I will show you here how to do it.

  1. Open a new text file
  2. Next you need to decide if you are going to be redirecting the entire site or just certain pages.

    3. Save the text file as .htaccess

    4. Upload to old site hosting.

90% of the time you will be able to do it through the domain registrar so you will not need to host the old domain at all.  A case where you would is when you might want to split a site up into several other sites and redirect different aspects to different sites.

If you end up creating your own .htaccess file it is vital that you set your FTP to ASCII and not Binary. If that does not make sense don't worry about why, just check the settings in your FTP client and make sure it is set to ASCII.

Also you will want to double check your hosting platfrom (cPanel etc) and make sure that the file is saved as .htaccess and not .htaccess.txt  That is a very common mistake people make. If it is saved as a .txt then it will not work.

It may help to understand what the code is that I wrote above so I will break it down for you.

Redirect 301 / http://www.newsite.com/   redirect is obviously saying we are going somewhere else. 301 says it is permanent. The first / says "entire content of url". And the last part is the new address.

Redirect 301 "/old page.htm"  http://www.newsite.com/newpage.htm Everything here is the same except you will notice that there are quotation marks like this "/old page.htm"  . The quotation marks are telling the search engines that it is only part of the site that has been moved.

And that is pretty much it for 301 redirects. Good luck.

OK, showing off ignorance here probably, but what on earth is a 301-redirect? And how is it done?

And sorry to be off topic everyone. But it seems my PR went down in the past week or something, I've been told it's probably just a glitch…. but anyone elses PR move?

301 redirects are 100% Google friendly. They play nice together. And yes you can have all the traffic from one domain direct to another domain.

The first time I used it was way before wordpress, or blogs for that matter. I had several websites that I wanted to combine into a single website.

They also come in handy when you want to have a "page" on your blog that exists on another domain or an affiliate page. An example would be on one of my niche sites I am doing for the TBC Battle. http://cheapmalta.net If you go to that site and then click on "Check Malta Hotels" you will see it takes you to an offsite page.

I thought it was a total google 'no , no' to have a redirect? I tried to read another forum here about them but there was a lot of talk about PHP and Linux servers and then my brain exploded…. so after cleaning off my computer I'm back to ask, whaaaa????

I can buy another site and have it all it's traffic directed to my site? Or am I totally off the ball here… help! haha

Thanks for sharing this link David, very glad to see that my site which is just a couple of months old is already worth $7615, but like Jeremy I'm not getting all the ad revenue that it says I should be getting.

My site has been up for almost 2 weeks and already worth $2,776!!  Alright!!  The Alexa ranking was spot on as of last night but I wish I had $5 a day in ad revenue!  Right now, I have ZERO!! Smile

I checked that once before I think.  I am inclined to believe that the traffic numbers on the go daddy page are crap.

According to value the website, the page has only been opened 90 days and gets 6 views per day with a value of $72.  Ad revenue of $1/day est.

Living the Dream is said to get 1,000 page views per day and get $19/day in ad revenue with a page value of $19,137.   Which the ad revenue is low in its estimate and the page view values are 2.5-3 times higher.  So if the same holds true for that site, they get a whopping 2 views per day.

Pass.

The page for my site is dated of today.

But the numbers are pretty strange. 2,400 unique visitors in January. I wish (actually, I have no idea how many I had as I started being self hosted only mid-january, but it must have been closer to 1,000).

Lucky you, a few hours ago (I'm looking for domain names too, can you tell?) I've found this:

It tells you how much a website is worth, although I don't know how they compute this (apparently mine is worth almost $3800, I wish) but it also gives you a traffic estimator for the past few months. Although, the numbers are much higher than the ones from Analytics for my website…

David,

Did you scroll down and refresh the page?  The last time they had updated my page was last August and the value was 5114.00, when I refreshed it, it was worth 21,497 which means that they are smoking that good ganja weed, mon!  Cool

I want to put this post out there for an open call to this question…

I'm looking at buying a site that meshes well with my Free Travel Contests niche.  I know we've talked heavily about buying existing sites and putting a 301 redirect on them to gain in the existing traffic to our site.

I found a site on Go Daddy auctions that claims to get 14,000 hits per month.  The Alexa score is 25,000,000 though, and I am having a hard time verifying this number.  Before I go ahead and make a purchase or offer, I would like to confirm that this hit count is accurate.  I figure 14,000 hits per month would be a good investment via a redirect since my subscription rates are very high.

Does anyone have a site they know that can check out estimated hits per month?  I really want to confirm this number before I purchase or offer, and all I have right now is the "Traffic" valuation from Go Daddy auctions.  There are around 200 links on Yahoo and 1 on Google according to the service.
