You can set the location your site is for in Google Webmaster tools. You might write a post meant for Norway but it may not rank as well in Norway than a competitor that has a site meant strictly for Norway.

I use Market Samurai to test how I rank in certain countries. But you can check manually by going to the Google site for that country. For example of you wanted to check Norway just go to http://www.google.no/ and run a search. Google has a TLD for every country that I know of. ( I may be wrong) I often check http://www.google.co.uk as well as http://www.google.com

If it is a new post you cannot rely on the rankings as accurate. Google uses hundreds of data centers. You might rank on page one in one country and page 500 in another. But after the other data center catches up you could easily move to page one for that country as well. Some countries can take 12 weeks or more to index properly.

A question: Does it vary from country to country? E.g. if I google "Skopje things to do", a post I wrote shows up at towards the bottom of the first page. But is that true only for Google in Norway? And if so, how can one know how a post does in the UK, USA, etc?

Very interesting how the click % is broken down by position.  I can't believe the drop in clicks from the #1 to the #2 position.  Thanks for sharing Mike.  I always do key word research in Google AdWords before I write any post, but will be looking into Samuri.

I completly agree with Market Samurai. It is sooo much easier and faster to use than google keyword tool. However, if you don't want to spend the money you can still use google. But if you get serious about this stuff and want to save time and get more useful info than Market Samurai is the way to go. I'll be covering this in my up coming niche battle series as well.

Amanda, one more thing.  Just ran across this post from Norbert of Globotreks, and he does an awesome job of explaining Market Samurai in this post.  Check it out.

Amanda, Mike has given me tons of tips recently, and the best one has been to sign up for the free 12 day trial of Market Samurai.  It is a software program that allows you to research keyword terms.  THere is a ton that goes along with it, but they have a bunch of tutorials that explain the entire program well, very well in fact.  I caught on immediately.  It's an awesome program that I'm considering buying before the trial is up, especially since I'm really wanting to get into the niche sites.  Keywords and keyword phrases are something I've never considered, and now I'm really kicking myself for not learning more about them earlier.  There's a lot that goes into them.  I would highly recommend at least checking out the free trial.  It really is an awesome program, and watch as many of the tutorial videos as you can.  I learned a ton by just spending several hours watching them and taking notes.

Figuring the keyword before the post is not really that hard. What I do is I think of a post topic. Then I do so,e keyword research and see if any of them will fit with what I want to write. If not then I skip the post. If so then it is just like any other posts.

The Click % is pretty accurate. According to Google they get this:

1 – 42%
2 – 12%
3 – 8%
4 – 6%
5 – 5%
6 – 4%
7 – 3%
8 – 3%
9 – 3%
10 – 3%   Page 2 gets 10% total

As you can see it is pretty extreme.. personally I question if the top is Wikipedia that it gets the same percentage.

Mike, it seems like you sometimes figure out what keywords to go after before actually writing a post. How do you do this? For example, what kind of research did you do to figure out you could go after the "boat making" keyword instead of "boat building"?

And how do you find out the clicks-per-link on those keywords? I'm very curious to learn your secrets! I just tend to write my posts without worrying about keywords and the like, but I know I should start paying more attention.

How reliable is it to say that the #1 position will always have the most clicks?  Does Google alternate its rankings for #1 based on the amount of hits that a page in the top 10 get?  I have #1 for Living the Dream right now, and was under the impression its a mixture of clicks, page strength, and back links.  Is it possible that if you got in the top 3, you might have more traffic than #1 or #2 just because of your content?  I can't imagine that people always click #1 more, unless google flips pages such that the one that gets the most clicks is always at #1.  I'd feel like getting in the Top 3-5 gives you a great chance for clicks, but the rest of that would be based off your site and not your placement.

But it is good to know that it is better to shoot for more top placements in less frequent keywords than bigger ones.  To get anywhere near the top in travel you'd be around page 5 or 6.  Even with that, I never go page 5 or 6, and never search just travel.  So I can imagine that picking up random words that people search for more connectedly would be better and easier for higher placement.

I have been getting a lot of emails and PMs from people that are having a hard time with finding keywords they can compete with.  People often make the mistake of putting a lot of time and effort into optimizing, building backlinks and SEO for the wrong keywords.

There are some keywords that no matter how hard you try you will never rank for. I see a ton of travel bloggers going for the word Travel..Really? Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity etc…. Don't waste your time and efforts.

It goes a little further also. My travel blog is certainly not a site dedicated to building boats, but I want my posts to rank well to get traffic.  I wrote a post about building my first wooden boat. My first thought would be to go after the keyword Boat Building. The problem is that it is very hard to rank for. If I were able to get it I would get 2,433 hits per day in position one. (42% CTR on searches) Not something I expect a travel blog would rank well for.

Using a little research I found that I could get the keyword Boat Making. Not my first choice by any means. However the number one position gets 243 hits per day. I am currently number 3. For a travel blog that is pretty good. I plan on getting position 1 soon.

By using a keyword that I would never of come up with off the top of my head I have a single post that will bring in 243 hits per day all year long with no promotion at all. Social media is great for the initial post boost but long term continuous traffic will come with getting the SERPS.

You can do that with every one of your posts and reach your 1000-1000 challenge
